Client Spotlight: Todd T$, Basketball Bouncing DJ Seeks Longevity

Todd Dog 225x300 Client Spotlight: Todd T$, Basketball Bouncing DJ Seeks LongevityMy name is Todd and I’m 43 years old. I moved from Michigan to Tampa in 91, work as a data analyst for a finical services company in St. Pete, and work as a Pro DJ on the weekends.

How did you hear about our boot camp?

I always had interest in the boot camp style of training, saw one of Xtreme Athletix ads, tried it out, and was hooked!

Why did you decide to train with us?

Two big things. I liked the no hype part of the boot camp program and gym. It’s just the basics, I found you don’t really need all of the fancy stuff to be fit, you just got to be committed to put the work in, and of course the quality coaching, coaches with knowledge. I sure they don’t want to kill us but sometimes it feels like it comes close, (laughing) and the workouts change up all the time.

T Basketball Masters Coral Springs 2011 199x300 Client Spotlight: Todd T$, Basketball Bouncing DJ Seeks LongevityI also didn’t want to be injury prone. I knew I had to strengthen myself to prevent injuries and prolong my basketball playing. So my overall longevity.

What has happened so far?

I have lost about 5 lbs. on the scale in a couple of months, and that is with increasing my eating. I’ve been sleeping better, and just feeling overall stronger. It has effected me in all areas of my life. Stress doesn’t bother me as much anymore and I dropped a pants size. I was a 34 pants forever, and earlier this year I went out shopping for a 36 pant. It was then I realized in the dressing room, “What the hell am I doing? I need to stop this before it starts!”

Changes you have noticed in your sport?

I play a lot of basketball, at least 2-3 times a week. I noticed a lot more strength in the game as far as physical presence, as in trying to moving around, holding position better, and a huge difference in my endurance. Game after game, I start pulling away from everybody else, as far as speed, agility, stamina and not feeling fatigued.

DJ T Money Equipment 300x225 Client Spotlight: Todd T$, Basketball Bouncing DJ Seeks LongevityAnything else you would like to share?

I want to say, two things. One, if you are doing any kind of workout, are you getting the results or seeing what you want to see from it? And if you are not working out at all, it’s worth giving the boot camp a try, you can’t possibly do the workouts and not see results.

Client Spotlight : Paul L, Tampa Bay Marine on a Comeback with Kettlebells & Loses 15lbs. in 4 Weeks!

Paul and Dad 300x223 Client Spotlight : Paul L, Tampa Bay Marine on a Comeback with Kettlebells & Loses 15lbs. in 4 Weeks!I’m 28 years old and live in Seminole, FL. I work in Clearwater Jet Ski Company manufacturing Jet ski engines and am enrolled on St Pete College working towards a Associates in Engineering Degree. I am a former Marine and looking to get back in.

How did you hear about us?

I have friend, Nick, who trained with Faizal and he let me know about him, so I came in for a kettlebell intro workshop.

Why did you choose to train here?

Paul Marine 205x300 Client Spotlight : Paul L, Tampa Bay Marine on a Comeback with Kettlebells & Loses 15lbs. in 4 Weeks!I’ve been looking to get back into the Marines so I want to get back to where I was when I was in. I was 180-175 lbs with a 32 inch waist then and was at my best shape I have ever been. Since leaving the Marines in November 2003. I got out of shape relatively quick because I didn’t do to much really after I got out. I also ended up getting into a car accident that hurt my back pretty bad, (hernias in L5-S1) so that kinda took me out of the equation quite a bit and the weight really spiked after that. I wasn’t really allowed to do anything. Right now I’m 5’11″, 290lbs with a 44 inch waist and I wear a XXL shirt. So at this point, the Marines would not take me seriously.

Why train with Kettlebells when you have a back injury?

After hearing about Faizal from Nick, I decided to meet with him. After spending the first hour with Faizal, I was able to workout and even train my back without hurting it. Because of my added weight, I feel like kettlebells can take my cardiovascular conditioning and work capacity to levels where treadmills and running cannot. I found that actually having someone instructing me how to use the kettlebells, and how I should workout. I really like having him tell me what I need to do without me trying to figure it out on my own. The best part was someone actually there telling me what to do and showing me the right way to do it.

What has been your results so far?

Paul Alt Kettlebell Presses photo 224x300 Client Spotlight : Paul L, Tampa Bay Marine on a Comeback with Kettlebells & Loses 15lbs. in 4 Weeks!I’ve been doing personal training sessions with kettlebells for little less than a month now but I already notice alot more energy and stamina, and able to increase my intensity in my workouts. Outside the gym, my flexibility has increased ten-fold. There is no more waking up in the morning and being stiff, it’s non-existent. I’m also starting to see differences in my shape and upper body, it’s filling out with muscle and is more defined, along with increased definition in my legs too.

Any final words?

Give it the hour on a Saturday that you need to come down, have the intro and find out by seeing for yourself how good it really is.

UPDATE 9/30/11: Paul has officially lost 15 lbs, from 290 to 275 with only 3 sessions per week, in the past 4 weeks! Congrats Paul! icon smile Client Spotlight : Paul L, Tampa Bay Marine on a Comeback with Kettlebells & Loses 15lbs. in 4 Weeks!

Choices

Fit or Fat Choices ChoicesThe other day, I was having a discussion with Coach about the best ways to help my clients set and achieve their goals. “Whenever I asked them about their goals, none of them ever said, “I WANT to be fatter,” “I WANT to be weaker,” or “I WANT to be sicker”, but why does so many CHOOSE to do so?” He said, “Faizal, you know the answer.”

I thought about it for a moment and He was absolutely right! Getting in in shape is ultimately based on the clients’ choice to make the decision to follow though with the coaching and advice I give them.

Why do people make bad choices?

Mr Magoo cant see beyond the end of your nose Choices1) Shortsighted: This is what I call “chasing weight loss”. You have a person that is very overweight, and all they want to is focus on their perceived idea of “fat-burning exercises”. This is logical at first, but also very flawed. If you join a boot camp or group fitness class with no focus on proper movement and strength development, in the long term, you will limited in the level of health & fitness you can do. And at worst, you will get injured.

sepia kettlebell1 ChoicesYou want to make choices that will help you look better, feel better and perform better. If you continually make decisions that negatively impacts any of these, your success will not be sustainable. This happens if your use artificial fitness methods such as spin class, treadmills, steroids, weight machines, weight loss drugs, etc. Authentic fitness such as athletic training, free weights, kettlebell training, and calisthenics are a lot more sustainable and will provide better long-term results in how you feel, look, and perform.

2) Priorities: Their fitness is not high on their priority list. There is a very big difference between “wants” and “priorities”. You can “want” everything, but you can only “prioritize” a few. As an engineer, I used to work with decision support systems, where you put enter your relative preferences, and it makes recommendations so that you get the most out of limited resources. Time and money are our most valuable resources. It is amazing how many people waste both of them.

Einstein Simpler Choices3) Illogical: They make choices that are based on feelings and are that not based on logic or facts. With the consistent bombardment of “fitness” information by marketing agencies and the mass media, it is so easy to make emotional decisions and is very hard to make sense out of all the conflicting information anymore

4) They quit: At the end of the day, this trumps all others. There are a lot of know-it-all quitters never win game Choicesquitters out there. If you are looking to get in shape, never listen to armchair quarterbacks. There is a difference between reading about training (rumors) and actual training. Fitness is not a event or a possession. It is a HABIT, and if you stop you lose everything much faster than it took to get it.

The key to everlasting fitness is finding short, well-rounded, and fun training options.

saved by the kettlebell2 ChoicesFor me, my clients and many of my strong comrades, Russian Kettlebells are a great choice if you want to get in shape. Kettlebell training is by far the most versatile, effective, invigorating, and life-style friendly form of fitness. Don’t continue to be frustrated & bored with your training, choose to join me at my next Kettlebell Workshop, grab a kettlebell and let’s start swinging!

Faizla Kettlebell Catch Snatch ChoicesAbout the Author: RKC Certified Instructor Faizal offers group classes, private, and online training services. He is an ISSA Certified Fitness Trainer and a DragonDoor Russian Kettlebell Certified (RKC) kettlebell instructor.RKC Instructor Faizal’s instruction is principle-based. “If we do something, we do it for a reason. Gimmicks and toys are not needed to get results, but hard work, attention to detail, and intelligent training design are.”

The Dark Side of Running

Champions do not become champions when they win the event, but in the hours, weeks, months and years they spend preparing for it. The victorious performance itself is merely the demonstration of their championship character.

– T. Alan Armstrong

Running Woman on Water 300x291 The Dark Side of RunningWith it’s low cost of entry, and it’s high level accessibility, running is one of America’s most popular form of exercise, unfortunately, a recent runnersworld.com poll revealed that 66 percent of respondents had suffered an injury in 2009. It seems that running is not as easy as tying on your shoes and hitting the pavement, yet that is exactly what I have found most people do.

The “dark side” of running reminds me of a beautifully stunning, poisonous flower, which is so attractive and inviting, yet can be extremely dangerous if the handler is not armed with the knowledge necessary to be able to care for this prized flower without bringing harm to himself.

Greek Olympic Running Vase

After countless hours of training, talking to, and rehabilitating clients and athletes from all walks of life, it continues to surprise me on how little, if any, training or actual education they have received on running. Because of my personal experience with this over the years, I believe that the above statistic is more born from the lack of education and training on running than the application of it.

After all, how hard can it be? Most of us have learned how to stand, walk, and run within the first year of our lives. While that may be true, there is a stark difference between performing an activity in any manner, and performing it effectively. For running, this means running faster, stronger, with more stamina and endurance while remaining as injury free as possible. Running, like any other activity, should be one that enhances our fitness and level of enjoyment, not one that frustrates us with pain.

running cheetah1 300x195 The Dark Side of RunningHere are some tips for you to help you enjoy and get more out of running:

  • Get a running coach and attend workshops and seminars on running
  • Read about running, not just about the training systems and programs, but about basic anatomy including the biomechanics and kinesiology of running
  • Know and respect your limits
  • Cycle your training
  • Train for speed and strength
  • Learn running drills and techniques of running
  • Move your body in other modalities such as dance, tai-chi or yoga
  • Watch animals run

If you would like to learn more about how to maximize your running program, Xtreme Athletix will be hosting a Running Workshop on Saturday, April 23rd from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.  You can click here or go to the workshops tab above to find out more and register.
